Welcome to Dysangelist. The Greek word angelos means messenger, one who brings news. An evangelist brings good news; my neologism dysangelist means a bringer of bad news, and there is plenty of it. My goal is not to depress people but to wake them up: even when the news is bad, facing up to reality is a good thing and a necessary thing.

I chose this name as a takeoff on the evangelists of Christianity to highlight the fact that sometimes it is possible for a new way of looking at the world to spread very rapidly, as Chrisitanity did in its first few centuries. Unfortunately (this is part of the bad news) we probably need a much faster rate of diffusion than that.

I will discuss aspects of philosophy, ecology, economics, and politics. There will also be posts of a lighter nature, including pointers to some light reading.
